Meeting called to order by President Mike Grammer at 4:35 PM.

President Mike Grammer stated that additional deposits of $100 per person would be needed by the Grand Canyon trip outfitter. Tom Hoane moved and Mike Grammer seconded that the money be paid to the outfitter and that future Grand Canyon billings do not need a vote. Carried. Mike Grammer moved and Robb Gillespie seconded that the husband of tonight’s speaker have his dinner paid for by the MBGS. Carried. Mike Grammer and Bill Harrison led a discussion of whether to send a representative to the AAPG Annual Leadership Conference in Tulsa on February 11Pth to the 13 th. Vote

tabled until the next meeting. After some discussion, Bob Reynolds moved and Tom Godbold seconded that the May 18, 2004 meeting be held in Mt. Pleasant. Carried. Pat Poli will investigate where the meeting can be held. Mike Grammer passed around copies of a letter from Ray Thomasson. Ray is requesting that local geologic organizations form a Popular Geology Committee or a Geoscience Outreach Committee to help the National Park Service gather geologic info, provide technical expertise and disseminate geologic info to the general public for nearby NPS parks. After some discussion, we will see if there is an interest and Mike stated he will write a letter to Ray Thomasson regarding our discussion.

Vice President Robb Gillespie stated that tonight’s speaker will be Dr. Heather L. Petcovic and her talk will be “The View from Below: Using Dike-Wallrock Interactions to Estimate Eruption Rates of the Columbia Flood Basalts” January’s speakers will be 2 students and there will also be 3 Poster Sessions. Tom Wellman will check to see if we can borrow poster frames from the State of Michigan. February’s speaker will be Dr.

Kathleen Benison from CMU and her topic will be “Saline Lakes on Earth and Mars”. March and April’s speakers will be provided by the SPE. The May speaker is unknown at this time.

Business Manager Pat Poli said that 22 people had registered for tonight’s meeting.

Tom Hoane moved and Leonard Espinosa seconded that the Minutes of the November 10, 2004 meeting be approved. Carried

Treasurer Tom Hoane stated that the current bank statement has $28,228.73 in Checking, $5,439.54 in the Hi-Fi Money Market Account and $22,675.00 held for the Grand Canyon Trip. Tom passed round a publication notice called “Oil on the Brain”. Tom also showed a letter from Julie Baldwin saying that she appreciated the rock kits that she gave out to school children during a talk that she gave. Tom gave out several sets of older, outdated CDs and kept one set as a door prize for tonight.

Member Bill Harrison suggested that the MBGS should keep a list of any presentations given by MBGS members and that we should publish a list of the names of the speakers in the Newsletter. It was moved by Mike Grammer and seconded by Bill Harrison that we do so. Carried.

Member Bill Harrison suggested that the State of Michigan Geologic Survey and the MBGS consider putting on a Regional or Michigan Geologic Symposium every year or two. Item to be carried over to the January meeting.

Newsletter Editor Tom Wellman commented that we need to rethink notification of dues payment.

Member Mark Nida informed the committee that there are enough participants that the
Grand Canyon trip can now have two boats.

At 6:20 PM it was moved by Mike Grammer and seconded by Tom Godbold to adjourn.
