Agenda Items

Tom Godbold

Tom followed up with AAPG to see why Aureal’s nomination for the Grover Murray Memorial Distinguished Educator Award was not successful. AAPG replied they had a large number of nominations for the award. AAPG agreed Dr. Cross was well qualified for the award and they will keep his nomination open for next year’s award.

We learned there is no limit to how many student groups MBGS can sponsor. Tom G. moved that we accept the request from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, to be their sponsor of a student chapter in AAPG, motion passed. Tom G. will draft a letter to U of W, and will circulate to the officers. Mike volunteered to be the Student Liaison to U of W and also to WMU if they form a similar group. Follow-up from Mike, WMU is looking to form a student chapter early in 2004.

Mike Grammer

Dr. Steven R. May, has been confirmed by AAPG for February’s talk. Dr. Luis Pomar will speak at WMU on February 4, 2004. Speaker for May’s meeting has been scheduled, will be Albert Wiley, from Michigan Tech. Meeting will be held at Mountain Jack’s in Acme. There is no speaker’s fee for tonight’s talk. April is still open. Tom G. suggested the hydro-geologist who investigated the Perrier site may be available. Other discussion included possible ‘kids program’.

Mike also brought up a question about attendance at the Tulsa AAPG meeting in early 2004. Policy of MBGS is to pay all of the Vice President’s expenses at the meeting. Reason for attendance is largely for the benefit of the V.P. to help understand AAPG’s operations and to make contacts. Mike indicated he is already familiar with AAPG and so may pass on attending.

Tom Wellman

Minutes from November’s meeting were distributed. Comments and corrections had previously been made via e-mail. Minutes were accepted.

Tom Hoane

Checking balance is $10,144.56. Money Market balance is $5399.01.

We have exhausted our original supply of 60 rock kits : ) Tom G. suggested increasing the previously agreed annual expenditure for rock kits to $300. Motion carried, will purchase another 90 kits at $180.

Tom brought forward the request from the American Geological Institute for a donation. Donations may be their general fund or earmarked for a specific purpose. Tom W. moved to donate $25 for Earth Science Day and $25 for the Fisher Congressional Fellowship, motion carried.

Tom needs to clarify whether Mark or Greg or both made payments to sustain our web presence.

Tom will contact Mark regarding insurance policy, so officers can review it. Intend to purchase a policy by early 2004.

Pat Poli

Reservations total only 13 tonight. Later, 22 attended the meeting. Will need to reserve space at the Acme Mountain Jack’s for May’s meeting.

Other Business

Tom W. suggested re-running the notice that we need a Newsletter Editor. Further discussion centered on needing a slate of officers for next year. Mike has a possible person to nominate for an officer position.

Discussed future door prizes. Approved purchase of 6 WMU car mugs for future prizes. Milt considered possibility of using pieces of core for door prizes. Further discussed if there is a link to WMU at the MBGS web site. LATER: I found a link to the Michigan Basin Core Research Laboratory . There is also a link to WMU via the Michigan Schools with Geology Departments.
