Agenda Items Tom Godbold

Tom received only one response from Mark Petrie regarding the newsletter notice regarding geologist certification. Mark supported certification. Tom believes certification should be selective for a specialty within geology such as geo-hydrology, oil and gas, etc. Mike asked if there was a specific proposal from AIPG – there does not appear to be one at this time. Some states such as Texas do not recognize AIPG certification and instead rely upon a state standard or exam. Tom G. asked if we could support their efforts in general. He moved that we support AIPG’s efforts in certification for geologists, motion passed. Tom G. will draft a letter to AIPG and will distribute to our officers prior to sending. We discussed the timing for a summer meeting for the officers prior to the fall season. Tom G. will circulate possible dates to the officers by e-mail. Need to get Robb Gillespie’s address.

Mike Grammer

Mike inquired about our association with SPE. We do not seem to get a lot of cross-over between the meetings. We considered the possibility of adding back in a couple meeting dates which could be used as a forum for students’ talks or a more general interest subject such as the geology of the Grand Canyon. Along these lines, we discussed asking the scholarship recipients to provide a half hour or so report or update on their projects. October 13th might be a possible date for these. Finally, we discussed the diversity of talks. Topics other than oil and gas are welcomed but the focus should be on the Michigan basin or at least have applicability to the Michigan basin. Tom G. suggested all of these issues need further discussion at the summer meeting, he will invite SPE officers to it. Letters to scholarship winners will notify them that they may be requested to present a talk.

Tom Hoane

Checking account balance is $9757.14, Savings account balance is $5416.12.

Tom Wellman

Minutes from April were approved. Officers were elected with a total of 9 ballots returned. Officers for next year are, Michael Grammer President, Robb Gillespie Vice President, Tom Hoane Treasurer, Bob Reynolds Secretary, Pat Poli Business Manager, Mark Wollensak Electronic Publications, Tom Wellman Newsletter Editor. Next, we reviewed the eight scholarship applications. Tom Hoane moved that the total amount of our award be increased to $2000 since we have not awarded scholarships in at least two years, motion passed. Upon further review and discussion, we decided to establish an upper tier award of $400 to Niah Venable, Anthony Sandomierski, Audrey Ritter, and Peter Voice, and a lower tier award of $200 to Brandi Boyd and Tristan Jones. Soumya Das and Alexandria Guth were not awarded scholarships. We also approved including copies of the historical CD’s Vols 1,2,3 and Special Papers 1 and 2 to all applicants.

Pat Poli

We have 15 signed up for meeting tonight. Discussion of next year’s meeting locations will be taken up at the summer meeting

Other Business

Mark Nida, MBGS sponsored 2005 trip to Grand Canyon now has one additional boat available to fill. Mark suggested having the guide present a talk on the geology of the Grand Canyon at a future meeting. Response from officers was favorable, discussed October 13 as a possible date. Mark needs to communicate with Robb Gillespie perhaps can be discussed at summer meeting.

Meeting adjourned: 5:50
