Meeting called to order by President Mike Grammer at 4:40 PM.

President Grammer stated that the WMU Geology Club as one of its activities is planning a classroom outreach program. They have requested that MBGS supply them with “rock kits” for the first two classroom visits. Tom Godbold moved and Pat Poli seconded that MBGS supply 60 rock kits. Motion carried. It was also suggested that the Geology Club consider making their own rock kits. Tom Godbold will supply examples of rock kits that the MDEQ makes and uses.

Mike suggested that the MBGS give out copies of the Gardner “Middle Devonian and Stratigraphy Depositional Environments in the Michigan Basin” Special Paper #1 to participants of the upcoming March PTTC Antrim Shale Symposium. Mike Grammer moved and Tom Hoane seconded that the MBGS give out one per person of the publications at the PTTC Symposium. Carried.

Mike stated he has received no response to a letter sent to Ray Thomasson regarding Ray’s letter about a Geoscience Outreach Committee to help the National Park Service gather geologic info about nearby NPS parks. Mike will follow up.

The AAPG Eastern Section is requesting nominations for awards. Mike will send the MBGS Officers a list of the award names and we can discuss potential candidates at the March meeting.

Vice President Robb Gillespie stated that tonight’s speaker will be Dr. Kathleen Benison from CMU and her topic will be “Saline Lakes on Earth and Mars”. March and April’s speakers will be provided by the SPE. The March speaker will be George Stosur and his talk will be “The Growing Demand for Heavy Oil & Gas and the Related Global Warming Issues” The April speaker will be Kris Ravi and the talk will be “Cement Design and Placement for the Life of the Well” The May meeting will be in Kalamazoo. Robb Gillespie will set out the program in conjunction with a Core Lab activity. A BBQ will be held and the program will be a discussion on where to find available Michigan geologic data.

Tom Hoane moved and Robb Gillespie seconded that the Minutes of the January 12, 2005 meeting be approved. Carried.

Bob Reynolds updated the Committee on the purchase of a MBGS jacket for John Wirth along with his Honorary Membership. Bill Harrison suggested that we should also consider other pioneer MBGS members for Honorary Memberships. We will discuss it more on the March agenda.

Treasurer Tom Hoane stated that the current bank statement has $28,016.65 in Checking ($21,990.09 is being held for the Grand Canyon Trip), and $5,446.58 in the Hi-Fi Money Market Account.

Bob Reynolds moved and Robb Gillespie seconded that Greg Varnum’s bill for updating our website be approved for payment. Carried.

Tom Godbold moved and Mike Grammer seconded that the MBGS donate $50.00 to AGI. Carried.

Discussion was held about a MBGS donation to the Michigan Oil and Gas Producers Education Foundation. Postponed for the March agenda.

We have purchased labels to update the existing MBGS letterhead.

Business Manager Pat Poli indicated that we have 20 people registered for today’s monthly meeting.

At 5:25 PM it was moved by Tom Hoane and seconded by Tom Wellman to adjourn. Carried
