Request to place in the newsletter to recruit new officers is not done yet. Will forward to Stan when completed.
Discussed the proposal for an insurance policy from McKay Insurance Company. Annual premium is $506.00. This would cover meetings and field trips. They request advance notice of a field trip or meeting site. Motion carried to purchase the policy for 2004. Decided the Business Manager should be responsible to make the notifications to the insurance company of meeting locations and sponsored field trips. Mark will circulate an additional list of insured items.
The request for assistance for an MTU student for a summer class was discussed. Buddy Wylie at MTU sent the request to Tom Godbold. In general officers were not opposed to helping out a geology student for a summer class but were concerned about the precedent of handing out money upon request. After discussion the Executive Committee decided to respond to Buddy with an offer for the student to submit their request via a Grants in Aid form used by the AAPG. For this to be offered to Michigan geology students on equal footing, the officers decided to resuscitate the MBGS Scholarship program. Tom Godbold will reply to Buddy Wylie relating our decision and outlining the process. Tom Wellman will send notice to Geology Departments, and will forward note to Stan for publication in the newsletter and to Greg for posting on the website. We will need responses by May 1st in order to make decision by the May meeting. Officers authorized a total of up to $1000 in scholarships this year, with up to $500 per an individual applicant.
AIPG sent a request to Tom Godbold to support their drive to register geologists in Michigan. Tom handed out their Fact Sheet and Frequently Asked Questions sheet. Generally this was perceived as a good change, may result in a registered geologist to perform certain tasks much as an engineer. However, there may be unforeseen consequences. We decided to publish notice of this issue in our newsletter and invite comment from our members. Tom Godbold will send a notice to Stan to be placed in the newsletter.
