Meeting called to order by President Mike Grammer at 4:35 PM.
President Mike Grammer led a discussion about the potential for the MBGS and the DNR/DEQ to host a Michigan Geology Symposium. There is a positive attitude to looking into it. Robb Gillespie, Tom Godbold and Leonard Espinosa volunteered to form an investgation committee.
Mike Grammer led a discussion of whether to send a representative to the AAPG Annual Leadership Conference in Tulsa on February 11PthP to the 13 th. The general opinion was not to send a representative this year because of the expense involved and because conference talks would not be too helpful for this years MBGS activities. Tom Godbold moved and Leonard Espinosa seconded that MBGS not send a representative to the Leadership Conference this year. Carrie.
Mike stated he will write a letter to Ray Thomasson regarding Ray’s letter about a Geoscience Outreach Committee to help the National Park Service gather geologic info about nearby NPS parks.
Vice President Robb Gillespie stated that tonight’s speakers will be Tony Sandomierski, Peter Voice and Niah Venable. Poster sessions will be presented by Audrey Ritter and Jessica Crisp. All are 2003-04 recipricants of MBGS scholarship funds.
February’s speaker will be Dr. Kathleen Benison from CMU and her topic will be “Saline Lakes on Earth and Mars”. March and April’s speakers will be provided by the SPE. The March speaker will be George Stosur and his talk will be “The Growing Demand for Heavy Oil & Gas and the Related Global Warming Issues” The April speaker will be Kris Ravi and the talk will be “Cement Design and Placement for the Life of the Well” The May speaker or program is unknown at this time. The meeting will be in Kalamazoo and Robb Gillespie will set out the program in conjuction with a Core Lab activity.
Robb Gillespie stated that we are running short of door prizes. Leonard Espinosa will dig into his collection of “stuff” from ESAAPG Meetings. Pat Poli moved and Tom Hoane seconded that we purchase WMU Geology Club mugs for additional door prizes. Carried
Pat Poli moved and Tom Hoane seconded that tonight’s student speakers have their dinner paid for by the MBGS.
Tom Hoane moved and Mike Grammer seconded that the Minutes of the December 15, 2004 meeting be approved. Carried.
Treasurer Tom Hoane stated that the current bank statement has $26,703.47 in Checking ($20,875 is being held for the Grand Canyon Trip), and $5,439.54 in the Hi-Fi Money Market Account.
Tom suggested rather then purchsing new MBGS letterhead and envelopes to reflect our recent change in address that we get stickers to attach to letterhead/envelopes. No vote.
Past President Tom Godbold inquired if Dr. Aureal Cross had contacted the MBGS regarding expenses for the upcoming AAPG Annual Meeting in Calgary. Tom Hoane said not as of yet.
Member Mark Nida informed the committee that the Grand Canyon River Trip is right on tract. Eighteen people have signed up for the trip and paid the amount required to date. By March 1PstP a final payment of $1075 per person will need to be made. Flights are booked and everyone is ready to go.
Leonard Espinosa informed the committee that he is planning a field trip to Oil Springs Ontario, perhaps in the fall of 2005.
After discussion initiated by Leonard Espinosa, Mike Grammer moved and Robb Gillespie seconded that John Wirth be given an Honorary Membership and that a MBGS jacket be given as a gift. Carried.
At 5:25 PM it was moved by Mike Grammer and seconded by Robb Gillespie to adjourn. Carried
