Agenda Items

Tom Godbold

Vote was previously taken and approved by e-mail to pay the $259.50 invoice for Smash Web Design.

AAPG is starting its annual membership drive. Cash awards go to the top 3 local societies which recruit the most members. Local delegates to AAPG are OK till 2006.

The Geological Society of Canada is organizing a symposium which will focus on the Niagaran Escarpment, to be held in St Catherines, Ontario on May 12. May still be possible to submit abstracts.

Delivery of society mail has been held up due to routing through MSU. Will carry over discussion of renting a post office box till next meeting when more officers are present.

Tom received a note from Walter Bolt, President of the Michigan Section of AIPG, encouraging MBGS to support introduction of a bill, which would certify geologists in Michigan. Certification by a state agency usually requires some sort of examination. Certification currently by AIPG is by resume and recommendation. Bruce Arndt added this might be more of an issue for those working in environmental fields rather than those working in oil and gas. Those present felt this issue should be published in the newsletter to get feedback from the membership. Tom will get more information from Walter. Will continue discussion of this item at next meeting.

Tom asked what MBGS should do for the student chapter at University of Wisconsin. General responses were to keep them informed of our activities, link to their website, respond to any questions they may have. Tom has notified them that Mike Grammer is the student liaison not Tom Hoane, as currently shown on the U of W AAPG Student Chapter web site.

Mike Grammer (not present, from notes)

The February 11th speaker will be Steve May. His flight arrives at 3:17pm and departs Thursday at 10:25am. Original plan was to have him stay at the Hampton Inn. Officers discussed possibility of reserving a room at the Holiday Inn South since that’s where our meeting will be (see below). Perhaps they have shuttle service to the airport, which would save someone from having to transport him back and forth.

The April 14th speaker will be Jack Thomas of AAPG , title not available yet. Mike considered asking Jack to join us at the officers meeting to perhaps get the AAPG perspective of the industry and other local organizations. He would like some feedback on this suggestion.

The May 19th speaker will be Buddy Wylie of Michigan Tech on “Michigan Basin Opportunities: Alternative Views of Well Logs Using Log Curve Amplitude Slicing.”

Tom Wellman

Minutes were previously circulated by e-mail, and approved at the meeting.

Have noted our web site still identifies MBGS meeting location at Mountain Jacks. This needs to be changed before the February meeting in light of our decision to hold the rest of our meetings this year at Holiday Inn South.

Tom Hoane (from notes)

Money Market balance is 5402.13, Checking account is 9463.84, as of January 8, 2004. 103 mineral kits are available. MBGS made $688 in sales in 2003.

Pat Poli

Pat researched other possible locations for the MBGS dinner meetings. Group concluded Holiday Inn South location is familiar to our attendees and is adequate to carry us through the end of the year.

Mountain Jacks in Acme will charge us for a minimum of 30 people. Suggestion was made to have them box up extra dinners and give them out as door prizes if we do not get the minimum number of people. Pat will pursue this with the restaurant.

Mark Wollensak

Has additional info and quote from agent. Will follow up to see how we would be covered or benefit from insurance for a field trip.

Northeast Lower Peninsula field trip is coming together pretty well. Currently have enough talks. Will be held in conjunction with AIPG, MAEG, and MBGS from April 31-May 2 near Gaylord.

Mark reminded the group of Mark Nida’s desire to promote a Grand Canyon trip in 2005. Discussion followed that Mike Grammer may be able to put together a similar package on another river for less money.

Mark inquired about the possibility of scanning publications in as tiff or pdf files. Tom W. said DEQ has a copier that may be able to batch scan documents as pdfs. Will check and get back to Mark.

Other Business

Leonard Espinosa indicated the Sudbury trip is being planned for October 2004. Considering a 3-day trip at the Kilarny Mountain Lodge.
